The library doors closed behind him with a final-sounding snick, and Lee mentally berated himself for allowing that tweedy librarian to hustle him out of there. They knew something, he could practically smell it in the air. The scent of secrecy, like a stink fouling his lungs.

When Ritchie had told him what he’d heard, about a young girl’s sudden departure from the beach that morning of the cleanup, with someone—or something—clinging to her as she bicycled away . . . Easy enough to learn who the girl had been, easy enough to trace her whereabouts here. They’d been clever enough to leave no blatant clues in the library, and he could hardly have produced a search warrant. But after eleven long years of hunting, he knew what he knew.

They were hiding a selkie.

No matter. It won’t be able to escape me for long.

Moving away from the doors, he almost bumped into a tall, leggy brunette coming down the hallway.

“Oh!”

“My apologies,” he said, steadying her. “I’m afraid I wasn’t looking where I was going.”

“Escaping the library has that effect on people,” the girl agreed. “Anywhere’s usually better than hanging out in there.”

Intrigued, he took another look at his companion. An ally, perhaps? Yes, perhaps, if handled properly . . .

“You sound as though you’ve had a run-in or two with the librarian, Mr. . . .”

“Giles,” she supplied quickly, tossing her head so that her hair fell perfectly back onto her shoulders. “He’s not so bad. Kind of stuffy, but—”

“But the students who hang out in there?”

Lee had years of experience working with teenagers. Admittedly, they were more typically college-aged students scrambling for grants and internships from the Institute, but the emotions were all the same, under the surface. He skimmed the possibilities and took a guess. “The redheaded girl. Willow, can be rather possessive, can’t she? I felt almost as though she didn’t want me intruding on her territory.”

The brunette’s body language changed completely, and he knew he’d struck gold. He gave her a carefully paternal smile.

“It would help me a great deal if you could, perhaps, explain the situation for me. So that I don’t blunder quite so badly the next time I need information.” He paused, looking at his watch. “It’s after noon already—if you haven’t yet eaten, may I buy you lunch?”
